Blue Spill worked closely with Passion Pictures and director Lili Fini Zanuck (Rush, Cocoon) over a six month period to create a range of animation sequences for Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars. The film is an intimate, revealing musical odyssey on the life and career of Eric Clapton, told by those who have known him best, including BB King, Jimi Hendrix, and George Harrison.

This particular animation sequence was one of the earlier ones we worked upon during the film’s London based edit with editor Chris King (Senna, Amy). Set within the recording studio, the sequence was driven by a collection of photographs. Cutting the images into the scene felt quite flat, so we explored a dynamic to keep the energy of the sequence. Driven by the music, we wanted to create some movement without being too gaudy. We find during these sequences that it is often the implication of movement, rather than the movement itself, which creates a seamless sequence.

We worked with Lili intensively across the film to deliver a wide range of graphical elements, including archival repair and photographic extensions, lower thirds, newspapers and motion sequences
