Blue Spill collaborated on Louis Theroux’s My Scientology Movie, designing the opening title sequence, end credit sequence, photographic sequences, twitter feeds, narrative cards, LTs and location IDs.
Inspired by the Church’s use of filming techniques, and aided by ex-members of the organisation Louis Theroux used actors to replay some incidents people claim they experienced as members in an attempt to better understand the way it operates. The film was produced by double Academy Award winning producer Simon Chinn, directed by John Dower and edited by Paul Carlin.
We came on board the London based edit during rough cut, having previously worked with John (Bradley Wiggins, Slaying the Badger) and Simon Chinn (Bond: Everything or Nothing, Legend of Shorty, Captive).
Blue Spill crafted a visual texture which could be cohesive across all in-film design. Our priority was to incorporate a sense of Louis’s voice throughout the film’s journey, which could embrace his fun, humorous approach without it feeling too ill informed. We approached the team with the concept of framing the graphical assets as a script, using chapter headings, for example, as script scene starters. This then informed the animation, which we could implement as a stop frame typewriter, with key letters appearing first, carriage returns and using whiteout such as in the end credit sequence above.
