Blue Spill designed the title sequence and over seventy in-film motion graphic sequences for Netflix’s Take Your Pills. The title sequence was nominated for a BAFTA Title Design Craft award.
Directed by Alison Klayman (Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry), the film explores Adderall abuse in American society.
Alison was interested in exploring an aesthetic which was eclectic. She approached us initially with references pertaining to digitisation, collage and a physicalisation of social media, distortion and repetition. Working with three different visual artists on the film, Alison was interested in exploring a visual “mash up” rather than the film prescribing to a single aesthetic.
We commenced the process working within her original live action edit. She and editor Jennifer Fineran had opened the sequence up with a series of placeholder images and ‘black holes,’ and using the guiding audio we were encouraged to conceptualise and design a range of shots for the opening sequence with a wide range of creative freedom.
We drew our colour palette from the medications explored in the film, and looked to create a building sense of energy and chaos as the sequence progressed. Graphically we were looking to engage with the subject matter with a unique perspective. This wasn’t a science documentary, and it was critical that the tone wasn’t delivered as such.
Working with Alison on this was incredibly rewarding, she was very open and supportive throughout the process.
And from Alison recently, “You guys are such brilliant artists and the best to work with… Thank you for making the film so special.”
