Blue Spill joins the investigation!

We collaborated with Talos Films on ID & HBO’s latest three-part docuseries, The Serial Killer Connection.

The series explores the connections between two women and serial killer Richard “Marc” Evonitz: Kara Robison Chamberlain, who was abducted as a teenager and escaped, and Bonnie Lou, Evonitz’s former wife, who learned decades later about the crimes he committed during their marriage.

We were brought on board to create an extensive and interconnected suite of graphical elements, designed to feel cohesive, tactile and seamlessly integrated throughout the series.

Water became a recurring visual motif, providing a distinctive thread throughout the visual language. We incorporated fluid, atmospheric water effects into the title card reveal, alongside a suite of Polaroid-style photographic treatments that gradually degraded and distorted under the effect of water. Our photographic language also extended to crime scene imagery, with a deliberately raw and procedural treatment designed to feel immediate and place the viewer directly within the investigation.

A significant portion of the investigative story unfolds through TikTok, making it essential that we captured the platform with authenticity and precision. We kept these sequences firmly rooted in the digital world, using comments, screen angles and subtle interactions to punctuate key beats throughout the series. TikTok became more than just a visual device; it was a tool of investigation that helped make the story feel intensely personal and immediate. To further establish this investigative world, we created a suite of redacted documents and newspaper treatments, using photocopied and Xerox-style textures to give the graphics a raw, archival quality.

Alongside these digital elements, we crafted a series of more tactile sequences, including calendars, maps and other physical artefacts. These were deliberately designed to feel tangible and authentic, as though the viewer were sitting alongside the investigators, examining the evidence themselves. Together, these elements helped create a rich, immersive visual world that remained cohesive across the entire series.

In total, we delivered more than 190 individual GFX sequences and elements, produced using a Rec. 709 workflow across Autodesk Flame and Adobe After Effects.
