BLUE SPILL IS IN VOGUE
Blue Spill took its first foray into the world of fashion, creating a complete GFX package for the series which consisted of various Vogue magazines & newspapers, location cards and photo treatments for Disney+ and HULU’s six part docuseries: In Vogue: The 90s.
This star-studded retrospective tells the story of Vogue’s shift from stayed institution into the modern magazine we know today under the editorship of Anna Wintour and a new crop of journalists, photographers, designers and models emerging in the 1990s.
Working again alongside Raw for this fascinating insight into the glamorous world of 90s fashion journalism, we infused our magazines and photo treatments with flashbulb bursts borrowed from the catwalk, glistening bokeh lights and glossy paper textures. Perhaps the first thing that comes to mind when the name Vogue is mentioned are the iconic covers and it was important that these should be showcased in our magazine treatments and to this end we developed dynamic animated sequences which transitioned from the cover to the necessary articles and spreads by leafing through the magazine. So that our work felt part of the world of fashion journalism and reflected the behind-the-scenes nature of the documentary, we created contact sheets for our photo treatments, bringing archive photographs to life as though they had just been taken and were ready for publication. We imbued our graphics with subtle pink, mauve and violet tones as a nod to the colour palette of Vogue and to give our work an authentic 90s feel, so that our magazines, newspapers, photographs and archive treatments felt embedded in the vibrant, changing and optimistic world of the era. Drawing upon the brand identity of Vogue in our choice of elegant condensed fonts, we developed a typographic identity for the show reflected magazine’s elegant masthead yet giving our astons, date and location cards a clean modern cinematic look through our selection of contemporary sans serif typefaces.
Blue Spill were proud to deliver over 100 graphic sequences using an ACES workflow in Adobe After Effects and Autodesk Flame.
